Daily Trust reports that the party workers at the national secretariat in Abuja, on Thursday down tool following the non-payment of their salaries for the past three months.
It was gathered that the workers, who are mostly youths working as cleaners and messengers, commenced the strike on Tuesday, after all other means to get their salaries proved abortive.
When Daily Trust correspondent paid a visit to the party’s national secretariat on Thursday, it was reported that the environment was very dirty following the refusal of the striking workers to perform their duties.
It was learnt that some of the striking worker who came to the secretariat were seen sitting idle, wearing sad look on their faces and complaining that they had been spending their monies on transportation to the secretariat for the past three months without payment.
One of the striking workers who spoke on condition of anonymity revealed that the party is paying them N14, 000 each as monthly salary, noting that even when they were being paid in the past, the salary usually come in late.
The striking worker who looked very hungry and tired said that their major fear emante from the fact that the PDP was on March 28 defeated in the presidential election hence might not want to pay them their money even though they had done their job.
“I am tired of this place. We have decided that strike is the best option for us now because they don’t want to pay us. You can see how the environment is today. We are not working. We are collecting only N14, 000 each from the party as monthly salary but they have not paid us for the past three months, and you know we are very junior staff. We don’t have long legs like others and we can’t carry placards or banners to protest, so we want our salaries paid,” he said.
He pleaded with party’s national chairman, Alhaji Adamu Mu’azu to intervene in the matter, which he described as ‘sad and unfortunate.’
Meanwhile, efforts to contact the party’s national publicity secretary, Chief Olisa Metuh, to confirm the development proved abortive.
The ruling party is believed to be considering financial strength in winning the incoming governorship and state house of assembly elections, especially as the Ondo state governor, Olusegun Mimiko, plans to use workers’ salaries to prosecute Saturday’s House of Assembly election in the state.
It is said that Mimiko has been distributing money to politicians in the state since last week, in a desperate bid to control the majority in the state House of Assembly.
