As the issue of ghost workers in the Benue State Civil Service continues to impose financial burden on the state, Senator representing Benue North East District, Barnabas Gemade has revealed that the greatest challenge hampering development at the local government levels in Benue is the high number of ghost workers.

A similar outcry was raised by governor Gabriel Suswam’s Adviser on Local Government, Mr. Solomon Wombo who announced that verification carried out by his office showed that the local government secretariats have over 14, 000 ghost workers on the pay roll.

This disclosure however, did not sit well with the Chief Executive of the Local Government Service Commission, Mr. Richard Gemade who issued a denial and set up investigation committee, the result of which has not been made public till date.

Gemade who echoed the problem of ghost workers at the opening session of the retreat organised for new appointees and caretaker chairmen of the 23 local councils, called on governor Samuel Ortom-led APC administration to identify and eliminate ghost workers so that development can happen faster in the state.

He noted that during the previous administration of Dr. Gabriel Suswam, local governments funds were mismanaged, thereby deepening poverty level.

The people are getting wiser, therefore leadership style of the APC must be exemplary and those in leadership must practice what they preach. People should also encourage government to fulfill its mandate,” he said.

Gemade while lamenting the weak economic condition of Benue and Nigeria stressed the need for the state and the country to grow income by creating new areas of generating revenue without subscribing to over taxation.
