BSU Lecturers Set To End Strike Action 

 

 

Benue State University lecturers under the auspices of the Academic Staff Union of Universities are set to end their ongoing strike action. The lecturers who downed tools about a month ago due to unpaid salaries are reported to be contemplating ending the strike as recent developments were encouraging.
Our sources have revealed that the lecturers received their February salaries last week and are expecting that of March before April 11 gubernatorial polls.
Speaking under anonymity, a senior lecturer of the institution was optimistic that the strike will be called off very soon, he said, ” We are expecting March (salary) next week. So if it comes, activities should resume on April 13th or so”
Concerning rumours that the vice chancellor had called off the strike, he said they were not aware of such a directive from the VC, saying only the ASUU chairman had the power to call off the strike.
You will recall that last month, we brought you a report that BSU lecturers had vowed to continue their strike action until February and March salaries were paid. It’s however interesting to see how this plays out as Benue workers have issued a one week ultimatum to Gov Gabriel Suswam to either pay the 3-4 months salaries owed them or face an indefinite strike and massive protest. Whether the lecturers will join other Benue workers in protest after their salaries are paid is left to be seen.
