The devastating report today revealed:
- Savile
had 'unprecedented' access to NHS hospitals where he raped and abused
patients on a 'grand scale' at 41 institutions over 24 years
- Paedophile was able to attack victims aged between five and 75 years old. These were patients, staff and visitors
- Staff
at Stoke Mandeville made ten complaints about him but none were 'taken
seriously' and he was allowed his own bedroom, where he abused victims,
and 24 hour access to all wards
- One
staff member was 'severely reprimanded' by management for complaining
about him. After one Savile attack a worker said: 'We have to tolerate
him because he makes so much money'
- Report
says Savile boasted that he had sex with corpses in Leeds for up to 50
years and had jewellery made from glass eyes which he had removed from
their bodies
- Experts believe that the NHS is still vulnerable to campaigns of abuse by paedophiles
Stoke Mandeville Hospital in Buckinghamshire was where his abuse was most prolific.
The
disgraced celebrity assaulted victims as young as eight years old there
but despite at least 10 complaints being made nothing was done by
senior managers to stop him.

Fame: Savile raised millions for the Stoke Mandeville, which led to him being seen as an 'asset',
Nurses
and other hospital staff dismissed allegations against Savile because
he was 'feted' by the senior management, who thought he was an 'asset'
for the hospital.
But Savile was using his celebrity status to cover-up his prolific paedophile abuse.
Today's report uncovers the litany of abuse he carried out over almost a quarter of a century.
It reveals Savile sexually assaulted a 10 year old girl while filming a BBC radio show called 'Savile's Travels'.
He
also inappropriately touched a girl of eight, 'grabbed' a 16-year-old's
breast and 'placed his tongue down' the throat of a 13 year old
Savile even abused teenage patients 'while they were being nursed in bed' the report reveals.
He repeatedly raped a 17-year-old care assistant in his own private hospital room.
She
told the investigation: 'Savile would just take hold of me and put my
hands where he wanted them. Or he would remove my clothes and put me in
the position he wanted.'
From the start of his relationship with the hospital, Savile's 'constant sexual innuendo' caused distress, the report said.
But his behaviour was 'explained away' as being part of his eccentric personality.
One
victim said she told the nurses about Savile's abuse but was told he
'wouldn't do such a dreadful thing' and 'raised a lot of money for the
hospital'.
Savile report: Informal sex abuse claims not taken seriously
Criminal: Nurses and other hospital staff dismissed allegations against Savile because he was 'feted' by the senior management
Free reign: Savile, pictured at Stoke
Mandeville in 1982, had his own bedroom, desk and 24-hour access to
every area of the hospital
STOKE MANDEVILLE'S SHAME
Savile had a flat at Stoke Mandeville - and his own office beside the children's wards.
Staff who worked there have revealed that when the DJ visited the hospital children were told to pretend to be asleep.
Two
former senior doctors at Stoke Mandeville have been accused of rape and
other abuses of children at the hospital at the same time, though there
is no evidence yet that they colluded with Savile.
One,
Bruce Bailey is dead; the other, Michael Salmon, was jailed last
Thursday for 18 years, having been found guilty of eight indecent
assaults and two rapes of girls aged 12 to 18.
Savile's
relationship with the hospital even deepened in 1980 when he was
appointed by the Government to raise funds for the hospital – giving him
even greater access to another generation of victims.
Despite
a series of informal complaints the report claims that at 'no stage'
were senior managers made aware of either 'his sexual offending or his
unsatisfactory portering'.
Victims
groups are likely to jump on this claim as evidence that today's report
is a whitewash for the hospital's senior management.
In
summary today's report found: 'Between 1968 and 1992 Savile sexually
abused 60 individuals connected with Stoke Mandeville Hospital.
'These victims ranged in age from eight to 40 years.
'The victims were patients, staff, visitors, volunteers and charity fundraisers.
'The sexual abuse ranged from inappropriate touching to rape.
'Savile
was an opportunistic predator who could also on occasions show a high
degree of premeditation when planning attacks on his victims.
'Between
1972 and 1985 nine informal verbal reports were made about the abuse by
his victims and in addition one formal complaint was made.
'The investigation found that none of the informal complaints were either taken seriously or escalated to senior management.
'The one formal complaint was dropped by the complainant's father due to her serious ill health.
'Consequently no intelligence about Savile's behaviour was gathered over the years and no action was taken.'
'It could happen again': Patients are STILL at risk of being abused by celebrities and volunteers at NHS hospitals
NHS patients are still not safe from Jimmy Savile-style abuse scandals, today’s reports warn.
Lax
rules around volunteers and celebrities working in hospitals ‘pose a
potential risk to patients, their visitors and staff’, the lawyer asked
to detail the lessons which need to be learned from historic abuse
found.
Kate Lampard said NHS volunteer programmes were ‘not managed and overseen at a senior level’, leaving patients at risk.
‘There
are already more than 78,000 volunteer numbers who in total contribute
more than 13 million hours per year to the work of acute hospitals in
England,’ she said.
Ms
Lampard added that ‘most NHS organisations still do not have adequately
explicit and robust processes for managing their relationships with
celebrities, important visitors, fundraisers and donors’.
The report says from now on all celebrity visitors should be accompanied at all times.
Hospitals are also still not able to ‘undertake barring list checks on all their staff and volunteers’.
A
separate report found that patients could still be abused at Stoke
Mandeville despite revelations that Savile attacked patients at the
hospital over 24 years.
It says the hospital needs to be ‘alert to predatory sexual offenders’ to stop ‘a similar situation happening again’.
Dr
Androulla Johnstone, the lead author into that report, said senior
staff there knew Savile was a ‘sex pest’ but none ‘claim to have known’
anything more.
She told a London press conference: ‘The individuals to whom these incidents were reported failed in their duty to protect.
‘Consequentially, no intelligence about Savile’s behaviour was gathered over the years and no action was taken.’
Jimmy Savile may have had sex with dead bodies for fifty years and stole glass eyes to make into trophy jewellery
Jimmy Savile may have been abusing dead bodies in NHS hospitals for half a century, today's report reveals.
A
former nurse has said she was warned about the activities of someone
she believes to have been the TV celebrity in the mortuary at Leeds
General Infirmary as long ago as 1954.
The
woman - referred to in today's report as TB - told investigators that
as a trainee nurse in that year she was heading down to the hospital's
mortuary when the ward sister told her 'to be careful and come back if
the pink-haired man is there'.
The report said: 'TB recalls that when she went to the mortuary, 'he was there so I turned round and went back to the ward'.'
Abuse:
Savile boasted that he had sex with corpses and had jewellery made from
glass eyes which he had removed from their bodies
It said: 'When we asked who TB thought the 'pink-haired man' was, TB was convinced that he was Savile.'
Today's
report said: 'TB told us that she felt angry that there were people in a
position of authority who she felt knew about Savile and she was cross
that nobody said or did anything about it.
'TB
was specifically referring to the ward sister, who warned her about
'pink hair', but also named the matron. TB felt that as they were in
positions of authority, they would have known about Savile's activities
but TB did not specify any abusive behaviour.
'TB
was convinced that the matron also knew about the concerns related to
Savile. TB named the ward sister and matron during her interview and she
felt it is highly likely that they are both deceased as TB said that
they were both middle-aged in 1954.'
The
woman is one of a number of new witnesses who have come forward since
the main report on Savile's activities at the Leeds General Infirmary
was published last June.
That
report outlined how the entertainer claimed to have 'interfered with
the bodies of deceased patients' at the mortuary and a patient at
another hospital overheard nurses discussing that they had seen Savile
have sex with a dead body at another hospital.
Dr
Sue Proctor, who led the main investigation into Savile's abuse at the
Leeds General Infirmary, told a press conference last year that Savile
claimed that large rings he wore were 'made from the glass eyes of dead
bodies at the mortuary'.
Savile's
other victims at the infirmary ranged from five-year-old children to
pensioners and included men, women, boys and girls.
How staff at Stoke Mandeville turned a blind eye because they were star struck by celebrity who could 'make so much money'
Jimmy Savile's fame, wealth and
prolific fundraising, which raised millions for the NHS, meant he was
free to abuse who he wanted, it was revealed today
Jimmy
Savile's fame, wealth and prolific fundraising, which raised millions
for the NHS, meant he was free to abuse who he wanted, it was revealed
today.
After
being appointed by ministers to fundraise for the hospital in the 1980s
Savile was 'able to access a new cohort of victims for his sexual abuse
in the guise of young charity fundraisers to the hospital', the report
found.
Stoke
Mandeville report author Androulla Johnstone this morning slammed the
decision and said the Thatcher Government was 'remiss' in giving
top-level endorsement to Savile.
The hospital finally confronted Savile in 1991 and moved to reduce his influence.
Today's
report reveals how one victim, who was abused for five years from the
age of 11, felt she felt unable to tell anyone about the abuse.
She said: 'Every time I went in that room I just knew that he would touch me wherever he wanted to touch me.'
One nurse told another victim 'don't be silly' after she revealed Savile had assaulted her.
In
1980/81 a registered staff nurse was told she had to 'tolerate'
Savile's abuse because of the amount of money he raised for the
hospital.
During
a training course at Stoke Mandeville, she was taken to Savile's room
on the hospital grounds. He proceeded to touch her inappropriately.
The
report says: 'Savile was wearing tracksuit bottoms. She could see his
penis poking out and it was apparent that Savile was 'fiddling' with it
and was aroused.'
But the course tutor said: 'We have to tolerate him because he makes so much money.'
'Victim 34' describes how she was abused by Savile while his camera crew photographed him.
Jimmy Savile's brother Johnny also abused women at a psychiatric hospital in south London
Jimmy Savile's older brother Johnny,
pictured, molested and possibly raped women at Springfield Hospital in
south London, the report said
A
separate report released today found it was likely Jimmy Savile's older
brother Johnny molested and possibly raped women at Springfield
Hospital in south London.
Johnny,
who died in 1998, worked at the hospital as a recreation officer in the
1970s and allegations of abuse by him were uncovered by Operation
Yewtree officers.
They
were made by five women, between 1978 and 1980, with the last two
culminating in him being sacked for gross misconduct of a sexual nature
in 1980.
Johnny,
who was five years his brother's senior, lost his job as a recreation
officer at a south London hospital over a depraved 'sex game'.
A woman, believed to be a former patient at the hospital, complained he mauled, groped and raped her.
A
spokesman for the hospital, which is now called the South West London
and St George's Mental Health NHS Trust, said in 2012: 'We are aware of
this case and if we are contacted by the police we will cooperate fully.
'We
believe there was a criminal case in 1979 over rape allegations. The
victim is believed to have been an ex-patient at the hospital.'
However,
the report by South West London and St George's Mental Health NHS Trust
found no evidence Jimmy Savile ever visited Springfield or any other of
the trust's units.
Victims
brand report a whitewash and say it ‘beggars belief’ no senior staff
were aware of abuse and NHS chiefs are cleared of wrong doing
Whitewash: Savile's victims says it is a 'cover up' because all NHS staff were cleared of any wrongdoing
Today’s bombshell Savile reports were dismissed as a ‘cover up’ by victims after NHS chiefs were cleared of any wrongdoing.
The
investigation into Savile’s 24-year reign of abuse at Stoke Mandeville
found that ‘at no stage were senior managers made aware of either his
sexual offending or… his poor moral behaviour’.
The finding comes despite at least 10 complaints being made against Savile by NHS patients between 1972 and 1985.
Over the 13 years nine ‘informal verbal reports’ were made about Savile’s abuse –as well as one formal complaint.
But
the investigation found ‘that none of the informal complaints were
either taken seriously or escalated to senior management’.
It added: ‘The one formal complaint was dropped by the complainant’s father due to her serious ill health.’
But
Liz Dux, of Slater and Gordon Lawyers, who represents 44 of the Stoke
Mandeville victims, said it ‘beggars belief’ that the report found no
evidence of senior staff being aware of the abuse.
Dr
Johnstone denied allegations of a ‘cover-up’ by staff, and said
Savile's behaviour went unchecked due to a ‘general disbelief’.
‘We heard that there were an awful lot of people that behaved in the hospital like that,’ she said.
