Federal Government has reacted to speculation that there were members of the Islamic State of Iraq and Syria, ISIS, in Nigeria.
FG Reacts To ISIS Presence In Nigeria
Coordinator, National Information Centre, NIC, Mike Omeri
Speaking at a press briefing on Wednesday in Abuja, Coordinator, National Information Centre, NIC, Mike Omeri, denied that there was no such as ISIS in Nigerian soil and assured that the military will continue to sustain its victory against the Boko Haram terrorist group.
Omeri, who spoke further on the security situation in the country, said the current bombardment of the Nigerian troops and the multinational forces against the insurgents had forced them to seek alliance by pledging loyalty to ISIS, National Mirror reports.
“The centre has noted the latest audio recording posted online by Boko Haram where they pledged allegiance to the Islamic State, IS. We wish to state that there is no evidence that IS operates in Nigeria and the latest attempt by Boko Haram to identify with the group is an act of desperation aimed at seeking attention and possible assistance from outside in the face of the crushing defeat they are suffering in the hands of the Nigerian Armed Forces and other regional collaborators. The fact is that Nigeria and her neighbours are pushing the insurgents away from their strongholds, capturing many of them and destroying several of their facilities,” he said.
Omeri said the Nigerian government wishes to assure everyone that this current tempo of onslaught against the Islamist militant will continue until every presence of Boko Haram insurgency is totally annihilated in Nigeria.
“The only nation that will exist in Nigeria is a united Federal Republic of Nigeria which demands the cooperation, commitment and patriotism of all its citizens,” he said.
Omeri, who also gave a hint on the current security situation in Borno State, revealed that the Civilian Joint Task Force, JTF, in collaboration with the security operatives have arrested no fewer than eight persons near Customs area in Maiduguri, the state capital while attempting to plant bombs in the metropolis.
“Latest reports from Borno State indicate that about eight people were arrested today around Customs Area in Maiduguri, Borno State by men of the Civilian JTF following the interrogation of two teenage suspected bombers who confessed that they were given the bomb by one Hassan Mai Doya of Custom Area to plant somewhere in Maiduguri metropolis. The suspects are now being interrogated by the security agents,” he said.
He called on the general public to be watchful, report and cooperate with security operatives to nib terrorism in the country.
“We continue to urge Nigerians to exercise extra vigilance especially at this period when our security forces continue to fish out members of the group who might have been embedded in the society, and whose activities have given rise to the recent bombing incidents within Maiduguri and other locations in the North east zone. The Centre, therefore, strongly reminds all Nigerians to exercise more scrutiny of persons and movements, especially within their areas of business and worship,” he said.
Omeri personally urge all motor park and market managers all over the country to increase their level of security within their business premises, and tasked religious authorities to put in place more effective security cordon around places of worship to ensure the safety of the worshipers.
Meanwhile, the general officer commanding 7th Division of the Nigerian army, Major General Lamidi Adeosun, has also stated that despite the problems, the insurgency will not overcome the Nigerian armed forces.
Recall that, Niger Republic yesterday disclosed that their onslaught against the Islamist terrorists has resulted in the death of 513 insurgents and the capture of 347 during a recent confrontation in Bosso, while Nigerian troops on their own part have been successful in reclaiming several towns previously seized by the sect members.
